The internet is now abuzz with talk of curbless showers, and some of your friends might also be discussing this recent trend. If you haven’t heard of them, you might be wondering, what is a curbless shower? Or if you have, you might be asking, what are the advantages of a curbless shower, and more importantly, should I get one?
What Is a Curbless Shower?
A curbless shower is one that has a consistently level entrance, with no lip or change in elevation from the outside to the inside. Often, this kind of shower has a frameless glass door, but it can also be made with a framed door or a shower curtain.
One of the main concerns that people have with curbless showers is whether water is going to get all over the bathroom when the shower is used. After all, the whole reason for the curb is to keep water in, right? Well, there are a couple of ways to ensure that water stays in. First, the shower should be a big enough space that the door is not receiving heavy, direct, constant spray. Second, the shower floor is built with a slight slant, so that water runs towards the drain. Third, a narrow drain can be installed on the inside edge of the door. Finally, the shower door can be constructed in such a way that there is very little space for any water seepage through the sides or underneath. Also, many curbless showers do not even have a door, but are laid out in such a way that very little water escapes.
What Advantages Are There to a Curbless Shower?
The main practical advantage of a curbless shower is that it can be entered and exited without any risk of tripping or stubbing toes. For most able-bodied people, this might seem like just a luxury or convenience. But for the elderly or those with disabilities, it is vital. Falls are devastating to the elderly, and the bathroom is one of the most likely places. Also, a correctly-built curbless shower is wheelchair accessible, which can make a tremendous difference in your life. Most of us never expect to need this feature, yet for many of us, it will be a reality some day.
Are Curbless Showers Expensive?
There is no reason that a curbless shower has to be more expensive than other modern shower styles. Everything depends on your individual situation:
- Current bathroom size, style and layout
- The kind of materials (flooring, door type, faucet hardware…) you choose
- Other modifications (handrails, benches, steamer…)
