The paint you choose should be water-resistant, scrubbable and mildew-resistant. Also, you want to choose your colors with care. So what kind of paint should you use in your bathroom?
Because bathrooms deal with a lot of daily splashing, dripping and steam, moisture resistance is very important. Satin or Semi-gloss paint are the best choice for keeping all that moisture from damaging your paint or the walls beneath. Also make sure that you have caulked all seams and edges where water could slip behind your tile, tub or other features.
Another advantage to satin and semigloss paints is that they have a tough finish, and hold up well to repeated cleanings. There is a bit of a tradeoff to consider: semi-gloss has superior durability, but it also highlights flaws and imperfections in the walls. Satin hides flaws a little better, but it is slightly less scrubbable.
Some paints are specially formulated for bathrooms and other high-moisture areas, and are designed with antimicrobial properties. This will slow or stop the growth of mildew and mold in your bathroom… you want that, right?!
Finally, the color. White bathrooms have a classic, clean look (as long as they’re not dirty…) and they are not likely to go out of style. Lighter colors tend to create a more spacious feel, while darker colors tend to make a room feel smaller. If you go with a darker color, white trim is definitely a great option. So decide whether you want to go for airy or intimate in your bathroom décor. Blue has psychological associations with cleanliness and good hygiene, so it is also a good choice for bathrooms, but many other neutrals, such as brown, tan and gray, look fantastic as well.
