Should you replace or reface your kitchen cabinets? That is the big question in the kitchen remodeling world. Well initially, people think refacing will save them loads of money, but in reality it is about 65-75% of the cost of replacing the cabinets with entirely new ones. This is because refacing is fairly labor intensive and only certain cabinet companies carry the refacing product. In addition, the bulk of the cost of cabinets is primarily in the door itself and not so much the cabinet box.
For instance, Bill and Barbara live in a thirty-year-old home with fairly nice kitchen cabinets, but they are in dire need to update the oak appearance. Since their cabinet boxes are still in good shape and they are both happy with the layout of their kitchen, we give them some options.
First, they can reface the existing cabinets with any type of wood, any color or finish and any door style, giving the kitchen a completely updated look. This option will cost them between $12,000 and $15,000.00 based on the number of cabinets in their kitchen.
Second, they can replace the cabinets with all new ones using the same custom cabinet line as the reface material. This option will cost between $20,000 and $30,000.00.
Lastly, since Bill and Barbara are trying to stay within their $15,000.00 budget, we give them another option. They can replace all the cabinets but with another less custom cabinet line. The quality is still great but the customizing is no longer. This option will cost more or so around $15,000.00. Given the three options, Bill and Barbara can now determine what best fits them.
Just remember, when deciding whether to replace or reface your cabinets, determine what’s important to you and your family first. What do you like about your kitchen? What don’t you like? How much are you willing to invest in order to complete your dream kitchen? Think about the end result and we will help you get there whichever way that is.
